What Is A Periodontist?

Drs. Sobhani or Almaghrabi are certified by the American Board of Periodontology to specialize in diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases, as well as maintenance of your periodontal health.

Periodontal diseases are a collection of conditions that can affect your teeth and their supporting structures, such as the gums and underlying bone.

Some of these conditions are:

  • gingivitis
  • chronic or acute periodontitis (inflammatory bone loss around the teeth)
  • gum recession or overgrowth
  • oral manifestations of various systemic (whole body) disorders

The American Dental Association recognizes periodontics as one of the nine specialties of dentistry. Periodontists receive extensive training, including three years of additional education beyond dental school. There is currently no nationally recognized implant specialty and no implant certification board that is recognized by the American Dental Association.

By choosing a periodontal specialist you will benefit from care provided by a team focused on the latest research-supported procedures for diagnosing, treating periodontal disease, and maintaining periodontal health.

This focus also includes the provision of dental implant services, as well as various therapies provided in tandem with your family dentist to achieve cosmetic dental goals, and thus, the smile you desire.

Patient Education & Preventive Care

As a periodontal practice, we are true believers that preventive care and patient education are the keys to long-term dental health. Ample research verifies that for the majority of patients, compliance with suggested periodontal maintenance therapy and meticulous daily plaque control techniques are vital components in long-term periodontal and overall dental health.

Although these oral hygiene techniques may seem simple and basic to you, we have found it helpful to review these with you and to ask you about any questions or difficulties you may be having during dental cleaning appointments. In other words, we strive to provide “dental health care” vs. “disease care.

Not only are we focused on the health of your teeth and gums, we’re also concerned about your overall health.

We focus on thorough exams reviewing:

  • past medical history
  • current drug regimens
  • checking blood pressure
  • checking the overall health of your teeth and gums
  • performing oral cancer exams
  • obtaining radiographs when necessary

and other pertinent subjects.

 Safety

Infection control in our office is also very important to us. To protect our patients and ourselves, we strictly maintain sterilization and cross contamination processes using standards recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
